Chiropractic Care Stimulates Stress Hormones for Effective Back Pain Relief

Back pain is a problem which most people face at some part of their life, but recurring or constant back pain can be a significant source of lost productivity and decreased quality of life. There have been numerous studies showing chiropractic care and therapies are highly efficient at providing relief to patients with any type of back pain problems. Chiropractors use spinal adjustment and manipulation techniques to help restore proper functioning and flexibility in patients with back pain. At our Aloha & Beaverton clinic, we meet patients daily who experience severe pain in their backs,  and provide them efficient pain relief with our chiropractic expertise.

Although a number of studies have proved that spinal manipulation helps alleviate back pain, there were still some mysteries which needed to be uncovered. Researchers in universities of South Africa and Wales came up with one theory that spinal manipulation techniques performed by a chiropractor help release more of the stress hormone, cortisol. This hormone is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and it helps reduce swelling and irritation.

The research was carried out on 30 patients from Durban, South Africa who reported back pain problems. These subjects were divided into two groups, one of which received spinal manipulation treatments while the other group was asked to rest for five  minutes but did not receive the treatment. Upon taking blood samples, before and after these sessions, researchers compared the serum cortisol levels.

The research showed that patients who received spinal manipulation therapies showed steady cortisol levels whereas the levels had significantly decreased in patients who were asked to rest.

The research concluded that chiropractic spinal manipulation techniques help lower back pain by prolonging the release of stress hormones. In other words, chiropractic care pushes the body’s own stress mechanism to heal.
