What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc – also referred to as a slipping or bulging disc – is a fragment of one of the rubbery discs between the vertebrae that stack together to form the spine. Typically, discs that become herniated are in the early stage of degermation. Because the spinal canal has limited space, it is unsuitable for a displaced herniated disc fragment. When displacement occurs, the disc presses upon the spinal nerves and can cause severe pain. A herniated disc can occur in any part of the spine but are most common in the lower back and neck.

The Signs & Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

One of the primary signs of a herniated disc is pain – which may spread from the back to the buttocks, thighs, and calves. Usually, patients with herniated discs will feel their pain intensify when they aren't being active, just as they will feel it less when they are resting. Coughing, sneezing, and sitting can also worsen herniated disc symptoms, as can age. Additional signs and symptoms of a herniated disc include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Radiating pain in the arms or legs

• Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs

• Loss of reflexes or weakness in the arms or legs

• Sciatica symptoms in the lower back, buttocks, and legs

• Lower back pain and neck pain

Can a Chiropractor Help With a Herniated Disc?

The answer is yes. A 2014 research study confirms what we've seen in our practice: the authors conducted a study of 148 patients with MRI-confirmed lumbar disc herniation producing back pain, sciatica, and radiating leg symptoms. The majority of patients (79) dealt with chronic lumbar disc herniation lasting more than three months, and 37 subjects had disc herniations for less than a month at the start of the study. All the test subjects received chiropractic care based on the needs of each person. After 14 days, 70% of the participants had significant progress in pain and disability; at three months, 90% had substantial improvement. Even more important, the recovery was retained by patients, with over 80% of individuals reporting improvement after one year.
